Job Description

Position OverviewThis position provides design and outreach support for the KU Libraries Office of Communications & Advancement. The design intern assists with the design and production of print materials (such as invitations, brochures, posters, etc.) and designs digital/multimedia components which support outreach efforts (digital ads, social media posts, animations, etc.). Other responsibilities include assisting with libraries events, outreach activities and marketing. This position is open until filled, but the review of applications will begin August 1.Job DescriptionUnder the supervision of the art director, this intern may perform the following tasks:

(40%) Create and produce assorted print materials
  • Design materials to support libraries outreach (including invitations, postcards, flyers, brochures, signage, posters, ads, bookmarks, programs, name tags, promotional items and other pieces)
  • Print and trim materials on site
  • Distribute materials
  • Incorporate design direction and edits from Art Director and Communications team
(40%) Develop digital components
  • Design/produce digital ads, social media posts, videos, and animations
(10%) Assist with marketing efforts
  • Help to develop targeted marketing messages for audiences and campaigns
  • Maintain a consistent design aesthetic for all publications and materials that fits within the University of Kansas brand
(10%) Support outreach activities and events
  • Assist with donor mailings
  • Assist with set up and implementation of special events
  • Support advancement efforts by welcoming donors and other guests to events
Required Qualifications
  1. Demonstrated experience using Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop, as evidenced in application materials.
  2. Clear communication skills and strong attention to detail, as evidenced in application materials.
  3. Ability to proofread, copy, and edit as necessary, as evidenced in application materials.
  4. Experience performing basic office tasks and demonstrating front-office professionalism (answering phones, making photocopies, etc.), as evidenced in application materials.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Coursework in graphic design, communications, marketing/PR and/or journalism, as demonstrated in application materials.
  2. Experience using Adobe Creative Cloud, as demonstrated in application materials.
  3. Experience creating animations/motion graphics in Adobe After Effects, as demonstrated in application materials.
  4. Craftsmanship with paper materials (consistent precision in cutting, trimming, scoring, etc.), as demonstrated in application materials.
  5. Experience in photography or a willingness to learn a plus, but not required, as demonstrated in application materials.
Position RequirementsDuring the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).Employment Conditions(1) Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.

(2) This is an hourly/non-exempt position.
