Depending on the needs of the MTA and Legal Department, a Paralegal may work on a wide range of legal assignments, including matters involving litigation, transactions, and authority governance. Responsibilities Assist and support attorneys in the MTA Legal Department with the delivery of legal services to the MTA and its subsidiaries and affiliates, including the MTA’s Operations, Administration, and Integrated Business Functions areas. Litigation-Related Duties Review notices of claim, pleadings, summonses, subpoenas, motions, demands, legal correspondence, and court orders; record content and update deadlines in calendars/databases. Monitor court dockets, notify attorneys, and update information in calendars/databases. Maintain Legal Department litigation files; assist at depositions, hearings, and trials. Serve or arrange service of litigation papers; review discovery demands and prepare draft responses. Collect, review, and redact documents for discovery; handle confidential and sensitive records (employee, labor, financial, safety, and law enforcement records). Schedule depositions and statutory hearings; arrange for court reporters and interpreters. Prepare digests and summaries of transcripts and recordings; prepare litigation papers for filing and service; verify citations and cite-check briefs. Conduct fact and legal research using publicly available databases and LexisNexis; prepare status reports. Other duties as assigned. Transactional Duties Assist in preparing correspondence, documents, and forms for execution in transactional matters; manage exhibits and proofreading; review ACRIS for recording data. Manage document workflows with internal clients and counterparties; distribute drafts for internal review and coordinate comments. Review surveys and title documents; update templates and maintain template libraries. Review notices and legal correspondence; track deadlines in calendars/databases; maintain transactional matter files. Track attorney workflows and status of open matters; prepare summaries of documents; file and record documents with public authorities as needed. Other duties as assigned. Governance and Other Duties Maintain corporate records of the activity of the MTA board and committees. Prepare public notice materials and assist prior to and during public hearings. Monitor pending legislation; conduct fact research; assist with LexisNexis research. Other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong organizational, analytical, and quantitative skills. Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to work with colleagues at all levels and with external parties. Ability to balance short-term and long-term deadlines; deliver assignments timely. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe, and LexisNexis or ability to learn them. Education and Experience Required Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience from an accredited college. Minimum 2 years of Paralegal experience. Preferred Prior experience in a law firm or in the legal department of a private or government entity. Familiarity with the MTA’s policies and procedures.
