SUMMARY:

Under the general direction of the Clinical Nurse Supervisor in consultation with the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), providing direct patient care and management of behavioral health patients. Assessment, plan and implement care and evaluating patients' progress towards expected outcomes. Takes primary responsibility for the patients' care as delivered by the Care Team.

Manage de-escalation of behavioral disturbances to provide professional nursing care to patients experiencing mental health issues for Behavioral Health and Recovery Services; to work with clinical and case management staff to coordinate care and assist in treatment plans for clients; utilizing the nursing process to provide appropriate and culturally sensitive care to UIHS clients.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Level I

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments, focusing on physiological, psychosocial, cultural, spiritual, cognitive status, pain, and patient/family education needs. This includes thorough psychiatric evaluations considering both physical and mental health conditions.
  • Formulate and prioritize a goal-directed plan of care based on patient assessments, addressing therapeutic, medical, and psychosocial needs.
  • Implement care consistently, skillfully, and effectively, making sure to establish care priorities based on essential patient needs and available resources.
  • Identify patient/family learning needs and provide the necessary education, including information about mental health conditions, treatment options, and coping strategies.
  • Recognize and address patient/family rights, age-specific needs, cultural, ethical beliefs, and ensure patient advocacy.
  • Collaborate effectively with members of the healthcare team, ensuring comprehensive patient care. This includes working closely with psychiatrists, therapists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Delegate tasks appropriately and oversee the duties of healthcare team members, ensuring clear and efficient communication.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of psychotropic medications, administering them under the direction of a psychiatrist or psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP), and monitoring for effectiveness and side effects.
  • React efficiently and calmly in emergency situations, implementing established protocols, and documenting events.
  • Guarantee the confidentiality of patient information, adhering to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) guidelines and other relevant laws.
  • Exhibit proficiency in the use of computers and telecommunication tools for documenting, tracking, and conveying information, ensuring accurate and timely patient record-keeping.
  • Stay informed of legal issues, including patient confidentiality and risk management, while being responsible and accountable for one's professional practice.
  • Engage in departmental Performance Improvement activities, research, and attend relevant trainings.
  • Respond promptly to emergencies, utilizing crisis intervention techniques when necessary, and assist in coordinating inpatient hospitalizations or additional services.
  • Must be willing to learn more about the American Indian culture and attend at least one Cultural Presentation/Training per year.
  • Must be willing to work with American Indian/Alaska Native people and demonstrate cultural awareness and humility
  • Must be willing to deliver services in a culturally responsive manner.
  • Adheres to accreditation and compliance standards/guideline

Level II

  • Participates in education and training of staff.
  • Assists in development of departmental policy, procedures, and quality improvement activities within the clinic as directed.
  • Facilitates and provides at least one educational training per year.
  • Monitor and manage the use of supplies and equipment, ensuring cost-effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Work closely with interdisciplinary teams to coordinate resources for patient care.
  • Act as a lead during emergency situations or crises, guiding staff and ensuring patient and staff safety.
  • Develop and review crisis intervention protocols and conduct regular drills.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Educational degrees must be from a US Department of Education accredited school

Level I

  • Possession of a valid Registered Nurse California license.
  • Graduate of an accredited registered nursing program and completion of the current hours required by the BRN of RN student clinical experience; or
  • Graduate of registered nursing program and either: 1) 2000 hours of RN experience in clinical area of specialty from a licensed acute care facility within three (3) years of graduation; or 2) graduate of an accredited licensed vocational nursing program that includes clinical student experience in acute care and has worked 2000 hours as a licensed vocational nurse within the clinical area of specialty within three (3) years before graduation; or
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited entry-level MSN program and have completed pre-licensure requirements to practice nursing.

Level II

  • A current ANCC Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing Certification.
  • Greater than five (5) years of experience in clinical psychiatry.

COMPUTER OPERATIONS:

  • Computer skills, including electronic mail, routine database activity, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, etc.

Experience with Electronic Health Record (EHR) programs
