The Forestry, Horticulture, and Natural Resources Group is responsible for citywide urban forestry, ecological and horticulture initiatives, policy standards, and performance measures, including street tree planting, Greenstreets, Green Infrastructure, natural areas restoration, and horticultural training and education. The Green Infrastructure Unit of the NYC Parks Department focuses on stormwater capture in priority CSO tributary areas, primarily in the right of way. This work improves the city’s sewer system function and transforms grey space into green, providing benefits of green space to New Yorkers. The division aims to protect, restore, expand, and manage NYC’s natural spaces and green infrastructure, including green roofs, wetland restoration, and stormwater capture. Foresters will review designs for engineered landscapes transforming impervious grey space to green space, especially in CSO areas, and will perform site surveys to identify potential tree issues related to green infrastructure siting. The role involves issuing permits for trees in the right of way and on-site, under NYC Parks jurisdiction, with about 50% field work. Major Responsibilities include: Participating in field walk-throughs with DEP and city agency representatives to survey potential green infrastructure sites for tree planting, species selection, and site design per NYC Parks criteria. Managing contracts for green infrastructure projects involving bioswales with trees and on-site plantings, reviewing designs, and providing comments. Performing post-planting inspections and tree health assessments with DEP. Performing advanced forestry functions in the field and office under supervision. Implementing standards for tree permitting, including removal, planting, and replacement. Consulting regularly with NYC Parks and DEP engineers and contractors. Scheduling and supervising field surveys and inspections to assess tree conditions. Managing the borough-wide tree database, tracking budgets, productivity, and program updates. Minimum Qualifications: Master’s degree in forestry or related field, or Baccalaureate degree with one year of professional forestry/arboricultural experience, or Associate degree with three years of experience, or Equivalent combination of education and experience, with at least an associate degree in forestry or related field. License Requirement: Valid NYS Motor Vehicle Driver License for the duration of employment. Preferred Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office, excellent communication, ability to work independently, and a valid NYS driver license.
