Job Description

The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) provides for the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible movement of people and goods in the City of New York (NYC). Position: Associate Urban Designer DOT is seeking an Associate Urban Designer to serve in the Urban Design Unit (UD) within the Office of Cityscape & Franchises. UD's mission is to enhance agency design standards and quality for the public right-of-way, focusing on place-making, environmental stewardship, social equity, and economic viability. Responsibilities include agency design coordination, policy development, project management, and research. The unit manages projects subject to interagency approvals and develops design standards to foster safety, mobility, access, sustainability, and equity. The Associate Urban Designer will review, coordinate, and execute urban design, landscape architecture, streetscape, planning, and transportation infrastructure projects. Key responsibilities include reviewing projects for PDC and LPC processes, developing proposals, preparing site plans and contract drawings, conducting site inspections, and presenting projects to various stakeholders. Minimum Qualifications A baccalaureate degree in architecture from an accredited college or university and two (2) years of full-time experience related to urban design development; or A combination of education and experience equivalent to "1," with a baccalaureate degree in architecture required. Graduate work in architecture, urban design, or city planning may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis. Preferred Skills Preference is given to candidates with a first professional degree in landscape architecture and a graduate degree in urban design, landscape architecture, architecture, city and regional planning, or environmental planning. At least one year of recent experience as a project contributor or leader, proficiency in AutoCAD, SketchUp, Rhino, Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, and PowerPoint, excellent graphic communication and organizational skills, and strong knowledge of sustainability and universal design principles are desirable.
